Second Arrangement was originally supposed to be on Gaucho, but the assistant engineer mistakenly erased three-quarters of the track after it was completed . It was re-recorded but Fagen and Becker liked the first arrangment of Second Arrangement better and wouldn’t put it on the album . There’s a few bootlegs of the second version - one’s below, but it turns out that cassettes which may hold a copy of the original version may have been located.

I remember as a kid, flipping through the neighbours vinyl collection. They had a Quadraphonic stereo with a small chrome joystick to fade the levels between the 4 speakers which was fun to play with . Anywhoo, they were kinda, um, rednecks. Salt of the earth types with a lot of Elvis, Floyd Cramer, Johnny Paycheck mixed in with the older kids Nazareth , April Wine, Kansas stuff. Damned if I can  remember clear as day that there was The Royal Scam in that stack. Didn’t know who Steely Dan was at the time, but the cover with the buildings with heads on them really stuck with me. Kinda weird that it was in their collection....maybe it was one of those Columbia Record Club deals where they ticked off the wrong box or something.  Also kinda wierd what snippets your brain decides to hold onto for 40 years.

I remember reading that Aja was a staple in the stereo stores for demonstrating high end audio equipment, back when there were stores dedicated to home audio

Ha yeah, that’s a bit out of place. Can’t see them listening to Kid Charlemagne turned up loud... must have been one of the kids’ records .

I’ve got a 4 decade-long love for the original Steely Dan run (nothing post-Gaucho, tyvm), but this feels like one that may not have made the cut, regardless of sound quality.

The YouTube video was actually a restored bootleg of the half finished 2nd attempt. They were so disappointed they didn’t actually fully finish recording it the second time around.

Looking forward to hearing it anyways, if only so that poor junior engineer who overwrote the track can find some peace...

I read the linked article. The track just doesn’t strike me as a truly great Dan song, but I’d still like to hear whatever arrangement is on this newly unearthed tape.

Their lyrical peak was The Royal Scam , IMO, and while the musicianship on Aja is astounding - par for the course for these guys & their cast of regulars and hired guns - the songs were mostly a step down from those on Scam . Gaucho was yet another half-step below that, so this track may fit well with the rest of it.

T hat poor bastard, can’t imagine how he must have felt when he realized what happened.
